Anna Calvi’s Tommy EP features four songs written specifically for Peaky Blinders. As well as the haunting “Ain’t No Grave”, the EP includes a cover of “Red Right Hand” - the Peaky Blinders theme song by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All The Tired Horses”, and an original song by Calvi, “Burning Down”.
“I’ve been living in the character of Tommy Shelby for years now. The only way to write for this show is to get inside his head - I’ve dreamed about him every night for months, and when I pick up my guitar I try to play to his inner thoughts. My guitar is his violence and my voice is his hope.”
Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
